PRO Not sure why you are having Picture problems, I use auctionpix (paid
service) and it is working OK, and Colin (who uses the free service) has pics
showing on the Ebay board. If you still have a problem give them an email. Among
the reasons I use them is that the boss (Eddie) is always very quick to respond
and is very helpful, being a small company you get personal service.

If anyone is interested in the topic under discussion on the Threaded Board,
please go to post #218. Here is one
lot
currently being auctioned by my chat partner. I have zero knowledge of this item
but find it interesting. The seller's other lot is a large Heligoland found
through the search. I hate being offbase, but I'm interested in the authenticity
of the stamps in these auctions since the seller was emphatic about selling "as
is" on Ebay, and he currently has two auctions up under that category. I'm not
placing any additional information here.
Just curious,

A certain seller of fakes and forgeries from the UK should be happy, since at
least one of their items in fakes and forgeries appears on eBay.com in

Another appears in its correct point of origin.
Guess we have to wait a while to see where the rest of the morasse will be

And now, for something completely different (but yet philatelic!):
Here's a story on how the Indian postal service delivers mail in the state of
Himachal Pradesh, which is India's northernmost state, in the Himalayas and
abutting Tibet. They use a combination of high-tech and low-tech solutions to
deliver the mail to residents who live in areas without even roads, and some of
whom are cave dwellers.

Duncan, my first "in-person" auction experience was the opposite of what
Ken described. I first attended a Rumsey auction, back when they used to allow
lot inspection inside the auction room. So there we were, bidding on stuff,
while Dana Okey sat with his back to the auctioneer, inspecting lots for the
next day, tossing bids over his shoulder like a madman, and stopping the auction
every once in a while to back it up and re-bid on something two or three lots
back because he wasn't paying attention...

Bad stamps in auctions
So Ken did they ever let you back to participate in their auctions again?
;)
Paolo Yes, I see what you mean, we have to know who we are dealing with.
One eBay seller I purchased from was, I found out later, connected to illegals
and if I had known that I would not have made the purchase. Even more
surprisingly, another seller was quite cordial in his dealings with me but I see
he has been NARU'ed, apparently for being quite unpleasant with other buyers.
Despite the constant struggle to clean up the eBay environment, though, the
purchases I've made so far... well the whole process has been enjoyable and
there are many honest traders to be found, eBay just plays a small part and the
exchanges are really between us buyers and sellers. In fact, despite the
anonymous nature of the internet and the lack of face to face meetings, the
whole process works surprisingly well.
When one thinks about how easily "anonymous" drivers cross the line and take
part in road rage, it is easy to see how the same thing could happen on the
internet.
Heh heh, I just remembered, I saw the computer game "Postal 2" on the store
shelf yesterday. Just the thing for working out aggression after dealing with
eBay fraud.

An amazing matter of priorities
Hello All!
Duncan
The actual boss of a Dutch association (equivalent to the American ASDA) used to
be (maybe he still is, don't receive his auction catalogues anymore) an auction
director.
He's known for his mistakes in descriptions and for tendentially overestimating.
Once, long ago, I also paid my hard cash tributes to his improvised "philatelic
ignorance". Mine and many other's contributions probably helped his budget and
philatelic fame grow. Philatelic world is full of paradoxes.

The "other" thing that caught my eye (besides the coil franking) about Knud's
cover is that it is an unusual rate - "Postauftrag" - similar to C.O.D. but
instead the P.O. collected a promissary note and remitted to sender. Rate for
the period was 35 Pfg.

been selling stamps on eBay for more than 4 years (I have a different selling

Interesting item, Knud-Erik
K-E it is nice to see that your auction items sold well. Although it is
outside my collecting interests, one of your items really caught my eye, and I
see it attracted a few bids.
This
completed auction might not be viewable much longer I suppose, but it is an
attractive combination.
From what I've been able to learn, some collectors assume that since these are "Zusammendrucke"
pairs they came from a booklet. But apparently these were only paired for
vending coils. When the postcard/local letter rate increased to 7 1/2 pfennigs
the 2 1/2 pfennig stamp was created so that 10 pfennig purchases of the pairs
could be made from vending machines.
Anyway it makes an attractive and interesting cover, and I learned something
today.

I had posted for July 27. The sender had been searching the internet for family

lived at one time. He was astounded to find a cover addressed to his
great-grandfather, Albert P. Ward. He was able to answer the querry posed on the

was something he had to learn about from his father which he just passed on to

I must say that one of my pet peeves about the "About Me" concept on eBay is
exactly what this guy is doing - telling you absolutely NOTHING about himself.
So what's the point to doing an "About Me" if not to talk "About Me"? This

Hi Rob
My mainstream Manchukuo stamps is coming along quite well.
Currently only lacking the 13 on 12 6½ mm overprint on the 1935 issue of the
China mail provisionals ( the expensive one).
Doing less well on the city overprints since the only seller on eBay who knows
what they are insists on using Kerr sets, overprices sets and includes stamps I
don't need.
I really need to get to shows to be able to obtain those reasonably cheaply,
individually.
However, I hope he keeps listing since I have now figured out about a quarter of
the Kerr catalog in three months without buying either it or any of the stamps.
The North Korean seller just completely confused me.
Has all stamps that I wanted and advert for Paypal on his web site (allkorstamps)
then says he doesn't take Paypal.
There is no way I am going to send cash to a seller who doesn't
even know what is listed on his own web site.

cancer cures
For anyone not wanted to read a discourse regarding cancer treatments, please do
not read my post.
David K.: I won't even try to go into all of the details of Hoxsey and his
"cancer cure". I agree with your statements about what it porports to do, but
when it was studied by the MD Anderson Complementary and Alternative Medicine
evaluation, the patients had little supportive data at the clinic (i.e. few
positive path reports, little documentation, poor followup, and unclear
responses). The Livingston Clinic in California uses immunostimulatory
treatments and has better documentation. Neither of them with close scrutiny had
high long term survival rates - closer to 15%. However, this is still
impressive, since some of these are without traditional medical treatment.
Fortunately, I have had patients refuse ANY treatments and HAVE 5 year survival
with colon and lung cancer. Unfortunately those alternative treatments have
never been studied in controlled, randomized studies - the way things are proven
in traditional medicine.
I never discourage patients trying alternative treatments if they wish. I do,
however, explain to them that it is 100% unknown whether or not the treatments
work. I have had 200-300 patients try alternative treatments after failing
regular medical treatment - surgery, XRT, and chemotherapy - and I have had only
2 respond. One to American Indian tribal sweat treatments, and one to PC-SPES
prostate therapy. ALL of the rest, with various herbal therapies, laetrile,
shark cartilage, Philippines psychic surgery, Greek cancer cure, Livingston's
clinic, Tijuana Cancer cure (Hoxsey), the Brudzinski (sp?) horse urine therapy,
and many others -- NONE have responded by objective criteria. I had one come
back from the Tijuana type cancer cure who said he was told he was responding
nicely, but was forbidden to take scans as it would interfere with his
treatments. He couldn't understand why he was doing so well, but feeling bad,
and his stomach was swelling. A scan clearly showed marked advancement of his
disease.
The only reason I am saying this is not to destroy hope, but at the same time
we all want people to know the options and outcomes possible for what they
choose to do. My opinion and my experience is that they do little. That said, it
is still valuable that there do appear to be some people who respond to those
treatments. That is enough so that alternative medicine studies are being done
by "traditional" medical schools. If I had cancer and did not respond to
standard therapy, I might consider going to one of the less than traditional
methods and see if I could respond.
RTA, or radiofrequency thermal ablation of tumors is an accepted treatment
and very useful. I have had excellent responses, and as you have said, the local
control rate of the lesions that have been "cooked" (or frozen by cryosurgery,
or removed by metastectomy, or denatured by absolute alcohol injections) is
excellent, probably the 80%. The cure rate for the patient though for whom those
techniques are done is about 20-30%. This is still better than what we had in
the past for metastatic disease, which was palliation.

a correction from yesterday
Yesterday I posted a link to an alternative board that Mauro had developed and
had invited people to take a look at it.
It turns out that the permissions on the board were set too strictly, and it was
requiring people to register and log in before being able to view the specific
discussion taking place there. This was not the intention.
The expectation is that the board (really, "forum") will be visible without
needing to log in. However, if someone wants to post, then a one-time
registration is required. (This is the only way to solve a couple of the
problems on here.)
This time, let me post a link that goes directly to the "forum", rather than
just to a list of the possible forums.

David K.: Before I comment on your statements, to which post were you relating.
Or to whom is the statement in reference to?
March 17, 2004 David K.
My goodness; typos abound..okay it's a #65 block...still a bummer!
HOXEY Cancer clinic was closed by the US in 1935 after 15 locations were opened
and two Appelate Judges overturned the FDA's attemps to close them up. But the
government finally won. Cure ratio was extremely high; around 80%+. Tijuana,
Mexico is host to the Bio-Medical Center which carries on his work and is well
known as an alternative treatment center for cancer, again with very high
success rates.
Major California cancer research centers have over a 98% cure rate using high
frequencies on a none surgery approach by inserting a micro probe into the
identified tumor and burning 100% of all cancer cells with one treatment using
vibration which generates the heat to kill these cells. Multiple tumors have
been erased in one day. Remaining cancer cells are null. Follow-ups are void of
new growths in treated areas. Good news is always nice to pass along.

Bulk Postings
A similar thing happens in the UK. Charities in particular put a 2nd class stamp
on, and then receive their bulk posting discount as a cheque. However there is
one wrinkle. The post office don't want to be bothered cancelling the stamps on
these mailings, and encourage the mailing houses to precancel them - leading to
some interesting pieces of modern PH, as some appear to be applied by
ex-post-office machines. To "encourage" mailers to do this Royal Mail apply a
surcharge if they have to do the cancelling. Hidden away in the May 2003 postal
rate changes was an increase in this surcharge from 3% to 10%! No wonder
they all seem to be precancelled now. One mailing house adopted a different
approach, they had their own stamps printed (I believe self-adhesives by (Walsall).
These did not bear the Queens head or have any value (they looked like a
star-fish), but they served to "personalise" the mailing, and left the
accounting simple. They are also a very interesting example of a commercial-use
cinderella.
March 17, 2004 Chip G
Non-denominated Bulk
As an addition to Ken's comments, the mailer would put a stamp on the envelope
and then pay the difference between the postage and the amount due in cash. This
would allow them to both pre-stamp the envelope (as envelopes with stamps are
opened more than those with bulk permits) and pay the minimum due which would
depend on sorting, amount sent, weight, etc. Also, bulk mailers believe that
envelopes with 2 stamps are opened more often than those with only one stamp.
Even though that envelope has 2 x 5c postage on it, there is nothing that can
tell you what the total postage was for that piece.

The tied PPIE seal is from 1910. Thanks to Steve Taylor, I currently have the
EKU for this seal tied on cover or card.
The RFD hand cancel is worth more than the DC received marking. Pity that they
overlap (or "cancel" each other out).
Using stamps to close up folded printed matter is not common, but it is not rare
either. This seems to have been primarily done on local mailings within a town
or limited area (from like a church, large store, utility company). Obviously,
most desirable are items that have not been opened. Those that have been cleanly
split, dividing the stamp in half, exhibit nicely.

I am pleased and a bit overwhelmed by the response to creating alternative
boards, but it's great! Thanks to Paul, Michael, and others for their efforts
and energies. Both my work life and my personal life are going to be very happy
pretty soon!
As I mentioned a couple of days ago, Mauro had also spent some time developing a
board, and I asked people to take a look at that one as well.
Based on the input that people made there, at Paul's board, at Michael's, and
here, I have worked with Mauro to try out another "take" on this.
Basically, the "one room" concept that several of us discussed a couple of days
ago is what's behind this, but with some of the capabilities of more powerful
software.
If you'll go here:
http://uruguaystamps.com/phpBB2/index.php
and click on "StampChat: Today's Discussion", you'll see there's just one
thread, or "topic", as it's technically called. You can even save a link just
that board, without needing to see the rest of them.
However, as the message explains over there, it will also be possible to easily
archive certain topics. Hopefully this combines the best of both worlds: one
"room" to discuss in, and an archives area that certain posts get filed to. It
also has a very powerful search feature. The registration feature should also
reduce, if not eliminate, the number of times that America gets f****** (if you
know what I mean).
Would you take a look at this concept, register if you need to, leave your
comments there, and see if this might fly?
- - - - - - -
Regarding the registration process, once you register, you have enormous control
in your profile (a link at the top of the page) to show as much or as little
information as you want. Email addresses are hidden, although you can have the
option for someone to email you. You can specify what timezone you want the
posts to indicate. You can have it remember your identity when you log in the
first time, so that you don't have to log in upon your return (provided you
accept cookies from the site). You can even just click at link at the upper
right, "View posts since last visit" and have it do the work for you.
- - - - - - -
Again, this is still a test, and the concept might still need some tweaking. It
may ultimately turn out that Paul's, Michael's, or another alternative might
work better. But I'd like to see if this concept might fly.

these" he seems to have a regular supply. To his credit they are listed as being
marked copy

more eBay stuff
Funny, I was just about to post this comment when all the others appeared about
problems on eBay.
This article below, from today's San Francisco Chronicle, indicates that
several eBay merchants were tricked into giving up their eBay id
information through those spoof emails, and now the spoofers have the eBay's
merchants' customers' info, which they're using to now try to defraud those
customers.

(Don't know if the Chron requires registration before viewing, but if they do,
it's free.)

Ed., I will be pleased when Ebay.Com does likewise and it should especially
since the APS have outlawed them from their Stampstore. The APS SHOULD have
informed the NON PHILATELIC head of Ebay.Com Collectables to do the same.

Richard & Ed, thanks, I presume that is what has happened. Ebay 100%, Crooks
100%, Naive Buyers 0%.

New ebay.uk categories
Re. Fakes /Replicas on the ebay.uk listings.
This is a repost of my post on the ebay chat board.
And credit and thanks should go to D2 for that. It does show that constant
haranging (sp) does work at times because sooner or later there will be one
person who will listen.
Despite adverse comments aimed towards D2 on this and other boards during the
past few months about his continually going on about the fakes etc. he has stuck
at it. You should be pleased with the result David.

nomad55 Do you have anything relating to the Houston?
Chris - they were firing the star shells at the end

David B Put me down as a "give up" too. Reported lots of GB overprints
(including some with dated cancels of 1905 and later) from a number of different
sellers - absolutely no response.

Dave - I guess I fit into the category of "I give up". Now, when I see something
blatant or obvious, I just post it on my Spanish board and hope that the Spanish
collectors will eventually find it.

Anyone still sending queries to Safeharbor about forgeries of non US items or
has every given it up as a waste of time & effort,

I bought my Titanic card years ago rather reasonably. I also have a Lusitania, a
Maine, a Normandie, an Andrea Doria, an Arizona, an Indianapolis, a Rex. Looking
for a Morro Castle and a General Slocum.

Nomad and Pro,
Yeah, I confess that I rarely look at the wrong (picture) side of the card
either. I probably owned that CARDIFF Lusitania card for years before I even
turned it over. I have been pleasantly surprised a number of times at what is on
the card itself.
A couple years ago I picked up a ship card of the Olympic, the sister ship of
the Titanic. It mentioned the imminent launching of 'her great sister ship, the
TITANTIC in a couple months' or something like that. Found it in a dollar box
and sold on EBAY for around $400 I think, which was when the movie was still in
everyone's mind, so that probably didn't hurt..

That's a nice Lusitania card. One of the things I dabble with are cards and
covers relating to ships that have sunk - either through natural disaster or war
related events.

Norway Razor
Pro, Roger: I'm no expert on cancels but I've seen many and I can't recall
seeing the razor variant of the Swiss cancels (as we call them), nor any cancels
with BREVPOST (brev=letter). The type also is not mentioned in the chapter on
cancels in my "Handbok over norske filatelistika Bind III" from 1969.
One interesting type of "Swiss" cancel is the so-called "hjelpestempel",
literally "help cancel" with replacable letters, which were issued as temporary
replacements to (mostly small) post offices, e.g. when their only cancel had to
be sent in for repair. They can be distingushed by their larger diameter and
often assymetric placement of the name. Example of one I'm trying to sell from
SLATTUM.

Pro,
I sold a postcard with the Cardiff Paquetbot repeater on EBAY a couple months
ago.
here is the listing. I think the picture side of it accounted for about 95%
of the selling price though...

New prototype board
Good Morning, Day, Afternoon, Evening!
Bob in WA et al I have now created a new design for the navigation bars
at the new prototype board to make it easier to locate for the untrained eye. I
hope it works to everyones satisfaction. Furthermore, I have enclosed a bit of
explanatory text to the registration form page, so it wont be unclear as to how
many boxes has to filled out.

Today in Postal History
Good Morning, Everyone!
Today's dated postal history item is a UPU picture postcard from
Venezuela to Croatia in 1905. It has a view of the harbor at La Guaira.
My second item is a registered fieldpost cover from
Australian-New
Zealand Army Corps to Egypt in 1916. It was sent to the RAOC (Rear Area
Operations Center) in Ismailia in the middle of Suez.

Cardiff Paquebot
Pro That Krag machine cancel you showed yesterday is not rare, but
neither is it one of the commonest paquebot machines (which are London,
Southampton, Liverpool and Plymouth). There were two versions, yours is the
earliest, recorded 1911/1912. I have a note somewhere that is was mainly used on
mail from Atlantic liners landed at Fishguard.
